Bert is Missing - please help us find him!

UPDATE: BERT HAS BEEN FOUND!!! Someone called me last night but I didn't get the message and they called again this morning to say they had him. He wandered into their house last night, they were just 2 blocks away, on the street that is parallel to ours. I guess he had just wandered a little too far when he got out. I am relieved beyond words, thanks so much to everyone for their concern and for keeping an eye out for him. Those were 2 of the most heart wrenching 48 hours of my life.

He went missing on 4/19 from Regent Street between Palm and Redwood, in Redwood City, CA.
Please call us if you have any information!!! 650-735-1599. Thank you!!!!!

Aurora and Sweet Pea are now at Petsmart!

Aurora and Sweet Pea (aka Artemis) are now at San Mateo Petsmart!

We are hopeful and confident we will find a really good home for them, especially now that we have some really cute pictures and videos that show how cute and playful they really are! When they are at cat adoption fairs they tend to be very shy and huddle in a corner together, so I'm glad we have these videos (embedded below) to show people - they really do open up and are playful, cute, sweet and affectionate. They just need some time to adjust to their environment and feel that they are safe and secure, and in a loving home with people who will love and adore them as much as we do! (We would love to keep them if we didn't already have cats... who aren't particularly fond of the younger additions!)

Aurora has been through so much - having lost one of her babies (who was hit by a car before we got her) and then having wandered the street for two months... then having lost her second litter (we will never know what happened to them). After all she's been through, we really want her to have a great home.

It would be ideal if she could have a situation where she could go outside on the porch or in a fenced-in backyard, and get some sunshine (she stares out the window a lot, longing to be able to roam around like she used to). We were letting her outside for a little while, until my neighbor complained about how they were stalking the birds next door, and her feral indoor cat would scratch and hiss when the kitties would go near her window. One day her cat bit and scratched her.... and that was the end of that.

You can see videos of Aurora and Sweet Pea below.

It's really cute how Aurora's tail gets big and bushy when she's startled by something... even her own mischeviousness!

You can visit the kitties at Petsmart on Sundays while we are having our adoption fairs. We have them almost every Sunday from 1-4. Petsmart is located at 3520 South El Camino Real, in San Mateo, just south of the Barnes and Noble bookstore at the Hillsdale Shopping Center. You can also view them through the window any time Petsmart is open.

Please note that they are still very shy and a little freaked out about being at the Petsmart, so if you go to visit them, they will likely be pretty reserved and cautious (Aurora much more than Sweet Pea). But let me assure you that once they do come out of their shells, they are both very, very sweet.

Aurora will probably always have a pretty shy personality. She does let me pick her up and pet her, but only for a minute or so.  She will let my husband stick out his hand and she will sniff it and that's it. I am saying all this to just tell you up front, whoever adopts her will have to have a lot of patience and be ok with the fact that she may always be on the shy side.

But that's not a bad thing! It just warms my heart even more when I see her feeling comfortable enough to stretch, relax, and play.

The adoption fee for both cats is $150. The fee includes all their vaccinations and paperwork.  They have both been spayed and microchipped.

If you would like to inquire about Aurora and Sweet Pea, just call 650-260-2269, or email me at redwoodcitykitty@gmail.com.

Best regards,

Laura

And here are some more recent videos of Aurora and Sweet Pea at Petsmart:. They both LOVE to be rubbed and petted. Please note that the do shed! As all cats do... but you can really see it in some of these videos. They love it so much though... it's worth it, and giving them regular massages really keeps them happy and helps them feel safe and trust you.

OK so maybe this is not the best video ever but she really does play with the Cat Dancer.

This is a video of Sweet Pea catching and eating a pantry moth. She is very agile and has always been very good at catching things, more than most other cats.  Her current roommate at Petsmart, Ginger, hisses and her (and her mom) sometimes, so you'll hear that at the end.

Using a Phone-Dialing System to Find Your Pet... Apparently it really works!

I am SOOOOOO grateful to have found Aurora in August of 2011 (thanks to a lady who called off one of my flyers, and Stephanie from the Homeless Cat Network). Now, every time I see another "LOST CAT" flyer, my heart really goes out to that person and I want to call every one and say, KEEP THE FAITH!!! You can find your kitty if you just don't give up hope!!!

I like to recommend to people that they use one of those services where they dial like 10,000 people in the area, because I actually talked to two people who said it worked for them!! This was actually right after I found Aurora (I know... I could have used the info two months earlier!!) but now that I have heard good things about them, I would recommend people do that. I don't remember exactly which service worked for them but for some reason the "pet amber alert" comes to mind: http://www.petamberalert.com/. Here is the google page with a bunch of different services:

If anyone has a pet in Redwood City or close by, that they would like me to post on this site, just let me know and I'd be happy to!

AURORA HAS BEEN FOUND!!!

Ok I am sorry this is soooo late, but... I just wanted to let people know that Aurora, the Mommy cat I was fostering, was actually found, after 75 days and a TON of flyers and phone calls. You can see, from this picture, that she had gotten pretty skinny. She was sooo dirty, too! But now she is nice and clean.

She was hanging out at Sigona's, with another colony of cats. At first I thought, there is no way that can be her. She wouldn't have traveled that far! But it was definitely her. Now I just need to find her a good home! I am still looking for a home for her babies as well (and they're not looking like babies so much anymore... they're getting sooo big!).

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for their care and concern. I got so many helpful tips and calls from people, I really appreciate it a lot! Thanks to everyone who cared.

And to anyone else who ever loses a cat and has to go through this, NEVER FORGET:  Hope really is a good thing!!!!!

Another kitty missing

I just wanted to post this for anyone who might have seen this cat... his name is Nihi (pronounced "knee-high"... like how he looks like he's wearing socks).  I spoke with someone in my neighborhood about how his cat also ran away close to the fourth of July (I think it was July 2nd). He lived on Palm Avenue (cross street is Regent). If you have seen this kitty, please let me know and I will tell his owner. Thanks.

Please Help This Kitty!

Hi, my name is Laura and I am looking for this cat, whom I was fostering in Redwood City (on Regent Street) during the first week of July 2011. On the fourth of July, she got spooked by fireworks, and escaped from the room where she was being fostered, through a broken window (I thought it was sealed up well enough but sadly it was not).

I have seen her on several occasions since the day she got out.  But so far she has been too smart for a regular cat trap (she is not feral but very, very guarded). Thanks to people who have called from my fliers on poles and the small fliers I've been handing out, I've seen her in several locations, including at the Petco Parking lot, on Palm Avenue, on Regent Street, and on Redwood Avenue. She's also been seen in Palm Park, by the YMCA. She seemed to be staying within a fairly small area, around Hudson/Palm. The next time I see her, I will be enlisting the help of a woman who does a lot of feral cat trapping and rescue, and knows how to bring smart kitties like this one, back to a safe place.

My stepdaughter named her "Aurora."  Because I only had her for 4 days as a foster cat, she never got to know her name (so if you find her and call her by that name, she won't recognize it).  Her previous owner never gave her a name.

Aurora is about a year and a half old, and is already pregnant with her SECOND litter of kittens (she may have delivered them by now).  She used to live in the east bay, on a busy street, with lots of other feral cats.  I asked her "owner" in May of 2011 if i could please take her and some of the kittens from her first litter, to find good homes through a Cat Rescue Organization I do volunteer work for. I even told him I could get them spayed and neutered and bring them right back.  He refused to let me take any of them, saying he was attached and couldn't decide on what to do. I warned him that it was likely that with so many cats on his property, they could get hit by cars. I warned him that the mother cat (Aurora) would get pregnant again very quickly if he didn't let me take her to get spayed. I left my phone number and never heard from him, until I checked back with him a month later.

Sure enough, the mother was pregnant again and one of her babies from her first litter was hit by a car. It was so sad. He finally agreed to surrender the mother cat to me, with two of her kittens. My plan was to foster the three of them, and find them all good homes. I also planned to foster Aurora's babies, as I have in the past (I have found great homes for many cats and kittens through the Homeless Cat Network).

On July 19th, a young kid who sounded about 12 years old, called me and said he had her at his house, and would meet me at Hoover Park, in exchange for reward money. He refused to give his phone number (it was an unlisted number) or location or any details about the kitty, but he insisted it was her, she had all the right markings and was pregnant.

I was all set to leave, when he called and said when he tried to pick her up, she scratched him and ran and he couldn't find her.  I asked him for details about where she was and he said she was in a hole, and that's all he would tell me.  Then my phone went dead, and he never called back. It was really upsetting, especially that he wouldn't give any details about where he was. The fact that he said to meet him in Hoover Park (which is at least a mile away where she was last seen) makes me think she is no longer in  the close range where she had stayed for the first two weeks since she left.  Yes, I realize the whole thing could have been a prank call, but he really did sound legit, and I don't see why he would have had any motivation to lie. I realize kids do get bored during the summer, but I also like to believe most kids aren't EVIL.

I feel responsible for her disappearance and feel terrible about the fact that she is in an area she is unfamiliar with. It must be very stressful to live the first year and a half of your life at one place, then get shifted to the other side of the bay and have absolutely no idea why. Then, to have people chasing after you and trying to trap you on top of it has to be horrible. There is no way to explain to a feral or skittish cat, "Look, I'm not going to hurt you or try to cook you for dinner. My plan is to get you spayed and make sure you and your babies find safe homes and get veterinary care and lots of food for the rest of your lives."

If you see her anywhere in Redwood City, PLEASE CALL ME ASAP (But PLEASE LAY LOW, don't make a lot of noise or shine a flashlight in her face or do anything that might spook her, or she WILL RUN - which could be very dangerous if she is spooked and runs into traffic).  Right now what she really needs is love, and the best thing would be to feed her a very small amount of food (like a tablespoon) if you have it, and stand back for a few minutes.  I will be enlisting the help of a woman from the Homeless Cat Network to bring her back home.  There is a reward for her safe return.

She also has a tendency to hide under cars. That is primarily where I have seen her.

Thanks so much for reading this story. If you do see her anywhere in Redwood City, please call 650-260-2269. People have been extremely gracious and helpful so far. I am hoping that with just a few more calls, we will be able to get her back to a safe place (by the way we do have a plan for reuniting her with her babies, if she has already given birth). It really concerns me that she  has been crossing busy streets like Hudson and Woodside, so I am doing my best to try to get her back to a good home.

I have two cats who used to be extremely feral, but they are now very happy, healthy and loved. I believe every kitty deserves shelter and a good home, and I would like to see this happen for Aurora. I do realize there is a chance I may never get her back, but I still think it's worth trying. To quote my favorite line from The Shawshank Redemption:  Hope is a Good Thing.

Thanks very much for reading this.

Sincerely,
Laura
